After taking the previous photo it is just a short walk along the edge of a cliff to where this photo was exposed. If you have a hangover, just thinking about trudging up this hill can cause severe internal disturbances. The worst is yet to come.
The "Joe McGee" hoist and its upper A frame can be seen at the top left of this photo
This view more clearly shows the two humps in the ridge that prevented the frequent climb to the CCL house from becoming "just routine".
Raffaelli standing on a recently rebuilt section of the ladder below the CCL house. - This portion is a LADDER with RUNGS - Not steps! The cables on the stairway carried electrical power to the CCL building. The conduit at lower right replaced the older cable on the left.
Below where Raffaelli stood in the last photo are steps. Some have recently been replaced. Note how the cliff falls away from the ladder on both sides.
View from the CCL house at the peak showing the upper hoist house, the hill climbs and the cable supporting the Joe McGee.
Lower, left of center, A valley spanning cable can be seen descending from the A-frame. Below that, a portion of the ladder coming up the cliff toward the hoist house is visible. The walkway and ladder leading to the CCL house meanders down the center of the photo.
Due to the curve in the cliffs the ground lies a couple of thousand feet below this hoist. The "Joe McGee" measured three feet square and about a foot deep. Disney never had a thrill ride like this. The machinery that operated this bucket can still be seen today in the remains of the upper hoist house.
The "Joe McGee" or "Bucket" as it approached the CCL house landing. I rode in this rig once - JUST ONCE! Updated Photo courtesy of John Novacich.
